Certificates of deposit
A CD is a deposit issued by a bank for a specified term. Review the issuing bank, rate or APY, payment schedule and maturity. Brokered CDs may have different exit arrangements from bank-branch CDs; an early sale may be unavailable or result in a loss. Callable CDs may be redeemed by the issuer before the scheduled maturity.
Deposit insurance
Eligible deposits are generally insured by the FDIC up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category, subject to applicable rules. Deposits held in the same category at the same bank are combined, including deposits held through other channels. Coverage relates to the issuing bank, not to the brokerage as an investment guarantee.
Bonds
A bond is a loan to an issuer. Corporate, municipal and U.S. Treasury securities have different credit, tax and market characteristics. Interest payments and principal repayment depend on the terms and the issuer's obligations. Selling before maturity can produce a gain or loss. Bond prices, income and liquidity require separate consideration.
What to request
Ask for the issuer, identifier, price, yield, maturity, call terms, payment schedule and total costs. Minimums and availability depend on the specific product; no rate is quoted on this page.
